yearn.finance (YFI)
yearn.finance is a decentralised finance protocol built around automated yield optimisation. Its core purpose is to route crypto deposits into strategies that seek competitive returns across DeFi money markets, liquidity pools, and other on-chain opportunities. The project became one of the best-known examples of a yield aggregator after launching on Ethereum, where users could deposit assets such as DAI, USDC, USDT, and other tokens and receive yield-bearing representations in return.
The protocol’s best-known product is its Vault system. Vaults pool user funds and apply pre-defined strategies that harvest rewards, rebalance positions, and compound gains where possible. By aggregating capital, yearn.finance can spread transaction costs across many users and reduce the need for individuals to manually monitor interest rates, claim incentives, or move funds between protocols such as Aave, Compound, Curve, and other DeFi venues.
YFI is the governance token of the yearn.finance ecosystem. Holders can participate in decisions affecting protocol parameters, strategy approvals, treasury management, and broader development priorities. The project was originally associated with developer Andre Cronje, but it is maintained by a decentralised group of contributors and governed through community processes.
yearn.finance is distinctive because it turns complex DeFi activity into a more passive experience. Rather than requiring users to understand every underlying protocol, Vaults offer a managed, on-chain approach to seeking yield. As with all DeFi strategies, returns are variable and users remain exposed to smart contract, market, liquidity, and protocol risks.
