Koppers Holdings, Inc. is a specialty chemicals and treated wood products company serving infrastructure, industrial, and residential end markets. Through its subsidiaries, the company manufactures and sells products used in railroad networks, utility systems, aluminum and steel production, agriculture, and lumber protection. Its business is closely tied to the maintenance and expansion of essential physical infrastructure, particularly rail and utility assets.
The company operates through three main segments: Railroad and Utility Products and Services, Performance Chemicals, and Carbon Materials and Chemicals. The railroad and utility business supplies treated and untreated wood products, including railroad crossties, switch ties, bridge timbers, and utility poles, along with related services. This segment is the largest contributor to revenue and reflects Koppers’ long-standing role in North American rail infrastructure.
Performance Chemicals focuses on wood preservation technologies used by residential, commercial, and industrial customers. These chemicals help protect lumber and other wood products from decay, insects, and weathering, supporting applications such as decking, fencing, and construction materials. Carbon Materials and Chemicals produces carbon-based products including creosote, which is widely used in treating railroad crossties, as well as other compounds sold into industrial markets.
Koppers generates a majority of its revenue in the United States, while also operating internationally. Its distinctive position comes from the combination of wood treatment expertise, carbon chemistry, and infrastructure-focused products. Demand for its offerings is influenced by railroad maintenance cycles, utility investment, construction activity, industrial production, and regulatory standards governing treated wood and chemical use.
