Mercury General Corp. is an insurance holding company focused on personal lines property and casualty coverage in the United States. The company is most closely associated with private passenger automobile insurance, its core product area, but it also writes related policies for homeowners and other personal insurance needs. Through its insurance subsidiaries and agency distribution network, Mercury serves customers seeking protection against everyday risks such as vehicle accidents, property damage, theft, liability claims and weather-related losses.
Its auto insurance products include collision, comprehensive, bodily injury liability, property damage liability, personal injury protection, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, and other optional protections depending on the market. Mercury also offers homeowners insurance that can cover dwellings, personal property, liability and additional policy features. These products place the company within the highly regulated property and casualty sector, where underwriting discipline, pricing accuracy, claims handling and investment income are central to long-term profitability.
Mercury reports its business as a single property and casualty segment, reflecting the common economics of its insurance operations. The company’s results are influenced by loss-cost trends, repair and medical inflation, catastrophe exposure, reinsurance costs, state insurance regulation and competitive pricing conditions. Its concentration in personal auto gives investors exposure to a large recurring-premium market, while the homeowners and related lines broaden the customer relationship. Mercury’s distinguishing feature is its focus on mainstream consumer insurance rather than commercial or specialty lines, making policy retention, rate adequacy and claims management key indicators of its performance.
