Medallion Financial (MFIN)
Nasdaq Market Open
Medallion Financial Corp. is a U.S. specialty finance company that originates, acquires and services loans across several consumer and commercial markets. The company is historically associated with taxi medallion lending, but its business is now more diversified and is organised around recreation, home improvement, commercial and taxi medallion finance.
The recreation segment is the company’s largest source of revenue. It provides financing for consumer purchases such as recreational vehicles, boats, trailers and related leisure assets through dealer and partner networks. The home improvement business finances residential projects, giving contractors and homeowners access to credit for upgrades and renovations. Medallion Financial also maintains commercial lending activities and a taxi medallion portfolio, reflecting the company’s origins in financing taxi licences in major urban markets.
The company’s model combines loan origination, underwriting, servicing and portfolio management. As with other lenders, its profitability depends on credit performance, net interest margins, loan growth, funding availability and the broader health of borrowers. Its geographic exposure is concentrated in the United States, with activity spread across states including California, Wisconsin, New York and Texas.
Medallion Financial is distinctive because it has transitioned from a niche medallion lender into a broader specialty finance platform with meaningful exposure to consumer recreation and home improvement credit. Investors typically assess the company by monitoring loan portfolio quality, charge-offs, allowance levels, capital strength, funding costs and the pace of growth in its core lending segments.
