Dollar Tree tops analysts’ estimate for earnings but misses on sales in the fourth quarter

Dollar
Tree revealed its financial performance results for the fourth quarter on
Wednesday. According to the earnings report, the American chain of discount
variety stores topped analysts’ estimate for earnings in the recent quarter but
fell shell in terms of quarterly sales. Following the earnings report, Dollar
Tree was reported trading around 3% down on Wednesday.

At
$123 million, Dollar
Tree’s net income came significantly better
than the same quarter last year
when it was recorded at $2.31 billion in loss. On an adjusted basis, Dollar
Tree said it made $1.79 of earnings per share in the fourth quarter versus a
lower $1.76 estimate by the experts.

Tree’s Sales Grew 1.8% Year Over Year In Q4

On
the sales front, the company posted a 1.8% growth in Q4 as compared to 2018’s
fourth quarter. Dollar Tree announced $6.32 billion in sales in the recent
quarter versus $6.21 billion recorded last year. Analysts, however, were
expecting a wider improvement to $6.39 billion in quarterly revenue. In terms
of same-store sales, the company boasted a 1.5% increase in the fourth quarter.

At
the time of writing, Dollar Tree is exchanging hands at $80.0 per share in the
stock market that translates to around 15% decline in 2020 so far. Its
performance in 2019 remained close to flat on average with the stock opening at
around $90.0 in January 2019 and closing the last year only marginally higher
at $94.0 per share in December that marks an under 5% annual growth. Dollar
Tree currently has a market cap of $18.99 billion and a price to earnings ratio
of 23.12.

Tree Records $23.61 Billion In Sales In Fiscal 2019

In
fiscal 2019, the company boasted a 3.5% increase in sales to $23.61 billion.
Full-year same-store sales saw a 2.3% increase. In its guidance for fiscal
2020, Dollar Tree said that it expects its financial performance to see a $47
million hit ascribed to the tariffs. In light of the new regulations of clean
fuel applicable to ocean shipping, the company also forecast an additional $15
million worth of impact.

Dollar
Tree, however, didn’t provide any insight into the
impact of Coronavirus on its sales
this year.

Dollar
Tree also extended its plans of upgrading to the Family Dollar portfolio in the
recent quarter and launched a range of initiatives. The company said it wishes
to renovate 1,250 of its countrywide stores this year.
