  • The project is currently focused on solutions but seeks to scale its system to outdoor solutions.

IOTA has partnered with Lidbot to help streamline waste management. The IOTA Foundation unveiled this news on June 11 via a blog post, noting that this move aims to transform the waste management industry, which has pretty much remained the same since the invention of the garbage truck in 1937. While there hasn’t been a lot of changes in the sector, the collection of waste bins has now become more expensive. To help alleviate this problem, Lidbot and IOTA joined forces to help cut costs by leveraging blockchain technology.

According to the blog post, the Lidbot sensor runs on batteries and connects to cellular phones for seamless plug-and-play installation. It reportedly measures the fill levels of waste or recycling bins to the millimeter in real-time. The sensor then sends this data to the IOTA Tangle where it is stored in a permissionless and tamperproof manner. In so doing, the system creates immutable audit trails, which help boost transparency in the waste management sector, which is currently plagued with fraud and corruption among other issues.

Cutting waste management costs by up to 50%

Purportedly, the Lidbot sensor helps clients cut costs by up to 50% by enabling them track and analyze waste cycles in real-time through the project’s web-based platform. The sensor also helps optimize the collection process as needed. The project has already run successful trials across the globe, according to the publication. These pilots include working with public entities such as Taipei City Hall, Singapore’s Sentosa island, and Fortune100 waste management company among others.

At the moment, Lidbot is active in eight countries spread across the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The publication noted that while Lidbot currently focuses on indoor malls, airports, and other indoor markets, it is working on scaling its system to outdoor solutions.

Speaking about the potential of this project, IOTA Foundation’s head of strategic projects, Corey Sheft-Tannebaum said,

Reasons for choosing IOTA

Per the publication, Lidbot considered IOTA fit because of several reasons. These include,
