  • In a rare acquisition, SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, will buy the satellite data start-up Swarm Technologies.
  • Swarm Technologies will become a 100% owned subsidy of SpaceX after the purchase.
  • Terms and conditions and the money that is involved in the deal have not been made official.

The latest development that has hit the headlines raising many eyebrows and has taken many by surprise is the official announcement of SpaceX which will go on to acquire Swarm Technologies. As per CNBC, so far the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

A rare acquisition of sorts

The purchase is a rare acquisition of sorts because both companies are involved in doing different things. With the space company designing and developing systems in-house, obtaining FCC licenses and getting approvals sanctioned is a time-consuming task. The purchase will hand over absolute control of satellite and ground station licenses to SpaceX.

SpaceX, which Elon Musk owns, is a space company, Swarm Technologies is a satellite data start-up. Even though SpaceX’s Starlink broadband network is different from the services provided by Swarm’s satellites, the acquisition will benefit Elon Musk’s space company. The purchase will give the space company access to expertise and the intellectual property of the satellite data start-up. Once the deal comes through, Swarm Technologies will become a 100% owned subsidy of SpaceX.

Information about the acquisition

When CNBC reached out to the companies to learn more about the acquisition, representatives from neither of the two companies commented. The terms and conditions and the financials involved in the addition remain undisclosed. The filing said:

With the acquisition coming through, it is not clear so to how SpaceX will use Swarm Technology. Starlink is one of SpaceX’s projects. High-speed internet can be delivered to consumers anywhere across the world under this project. Swarm’s SpaceBEEs satellites are the most miniature commercially operational satellites in space measure as small as the size of a notebook measuring 11 centimeters by 11 centimeters by 2.8 centimeters. Swarm’s satellites use antennas to communicate and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The satellite data start-up company did come into scrutiny in 2018, when it launched 4 SpaceBEE satellites without authorization. For which it had to pay a penalty of $900,000 and even had to implement a five- year regulatory compliance with the FCC.
