  • The conflict between Epic Games and Apple began in 2020.
  • Epic had introduced a direct payment option to bypass Apple's 30% commission on in-app purchases.
  • The new app store takes advantage of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in Europe.

Epic Games has made a bold move against Apple by launching AltStore PAL, a new app store for iOS devices that enables users to install apps outside of Apple's App Store.

The app store, now available for free in Europe, has been made possible through Epic Games' MegaGrant program, which supports app development and innovation.

Epic Games vs. Apple: The conflict

The conflict between Epic Games and Apple began in 2020 when Epic introduced a direct payment option in its popular game, Fortnite, to bypass Apple's 30% commission on in-app purchases.

This action led to Fortnite's removal from the App Store and a subsequent lawsuit.

Although the court did not rule against Apple’s business model or its decision to remove Fortnite, Epic Games achieved a partial victory by challenging Apple's dominant practices.

The repercussions of this lawsuit have extended to Europe, where the Digital Markets Act (DMA) now mandates that platforms like Apple must permit alternative payment methods and app distribution channels.

This regulatory shift has paved the way for innovations like AltStore PAL.

AltStore PAL: A game changer for iOS users?

AltStore PAL distinguishes itself by allowing iOS users to download apps that are not available on the Apple App Store.

Developed by Riley Testut, known for the video game emulator Delta, and his business partner Shane Gill, the app provides a platform for self-publishing apps without the stringent requirements imposed by Apple.

Initially, AltStore PAL charged an annual subscription fee of 1.50 Euros to cover Apple’s Core Technology Fee.

However, thanks to Epic Games' MegaGrant, this fee has been eliminated, making the service entirely free for users.

The exact amount of the grant has not been disclosed, but MegaGrants typically range from $5,000 to $500,000, aimed at supporting developers and creators using Epic's Unreal Engine.

While AltStore PAL does not pose a direct threat to Apple's business, it highlights ongoing concerns about monopolistic practices in the tech industry.

Epic Games' initiative underscores the broader movement towards increasing competition and offering more freedom to developers and content creators.

Despite these efforts, Apple maintains a similar business model without significant repercussions.

Google faces similar scrutiny due to recent antitrust lawsuits, but such legal battles often extend over years, allowing companies to adapt their practices.

Nonetheless, Epic Games' actions represent a significant step towards challenging entrenched monopolies and empowering the developer community.

As Epic Games continues to challenge the status quo, the launch of AltStore PAL signals a shift in how app distribution and development might evolve.

By providing a platform for alternative app delivery, Epic is helping to foster a more competitive environment that benefits both developers and users.

While the journey towards breaking down monopolistic practices is ongoing, these efforts are crucial in driving industry change and innovation.
