  • This development comes as the search for four remaining passengers intensifies.
  • The yacht lies at a depth of approximately 50 meters.
  • Eyewitnesses and survivors report that the yacht was violently tossed by the storm.

In a tragic update to the superyacht disaster off the coast of Sicily, rescue teams have discovered four bodies in the wreckage of the yacht that sank early Monday morning.

This development comes as the search for six remaining passengers intensifies.

The latest findings, reported by NBC News, mark the second and third casualties identified from the incident, following the confirmation of one death on Tuesday.

The yacht, which sank during a violent storm near the Sicilian port of Porticello, lies at a depth of approximately 50 meters (164 feet), creating significant challenges for the rescue teams.

The vessel is tilted and obstructed by narrow access points, thick glass windows, and tangled electrical cables, complicating the recovery efforts.

Italian emergency services have managed to access some rooms on the yacht, but are struggling to reach the sleeping cabins where many passengers might have been when the disaster struck.

Specialist divers have reported difficulties due to the depth of the wreck, which allows them only 10 minutes of exploration before they must return to the surface.

Who was on the superyacht?

The identities of the newly discovered victims have not been released.

However, the missing passengers include prominent figures such as British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, Chair of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife, charity trustee Judy Bloomer; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo.

The Italian coastguard has confirmed that Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef, was the first confirmed fatality in the incident.

Eyewitnesses and survivors report that the yacht was violently tossed by the storm around 4 a.m. local time before rapidly sinking after capsizing.

Bayesian luxury yacht: What we know so far

This ill-fated journey was reportedly a celebration for Lynch, who had been acquitted of 15 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud in the US just three months prior.

The charges were related to the sale of his software company, Autonomy, to Hewlett Packard in 2011.

Lynch, who had always denied allegations of inflating the company's value, was extradited from the UK to stand trial in the US in 2023.

The trip on the UK-flagged luxury yacht, Bayesian, was believed to commemorate his acquittal.

Morvillo, who represented Lynch during the trial, and Bloomer, who testified for Lynch’s defense, were also aboard.

In a separate incident, Stephen Chamberlain, former vice president of finance at Autonomy and a co-defendant in Lynch’s trial, tragically passed away on Saturday after being struck by a vehicle while running in Cambridgeshire, England.

This news adds another somber note to the unfolding tragedy surrounding Lynch and his associates.

As the search continues, the focus remains on locating and recovering the remaining missing passengers while navigating the complexities posed by the wreck's condition.

The maritime disaster highlights the inherent risks of luxury yacht travel in severe weather conditions and has brought a somber reflection on the recent legal battles and personal tragedies affecting those involved.
