  • Lowe's scales back on DEI policies including participation and sponsorship of pride events.
  • The company will also stop participating in Human Rights Campaign surveys.
  • HRC has criticised the decision, warning it could harm Lowe's reputation and bottom line.

Lowe’s has announced a significant shift in its corporate policies, scaling back its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives following mounting pressure from self-proclaimed activist Robby Starbuck.

This decision marks a notable retreat from the company’s previous support for LGBTQ+ inclusion and Pride events, reflecting broader debates over corporate DEI practices.

In a recent memo to employees, Lowe’s revealed that it will cease participation in the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) surveys, which assessed companies' adherence to diversity and inclusion standards.

By opting out, Lowe's will no longer have to disclose its progress toward meeting diversity quotas and targets. Additionally, the company will no longer require employees to engage in Pride-related community events or sponsor such events.

Robby Starbuck continues to strike

Robby Starbuck has also claimed that it was his pressure on the company that forced them to take this decision. Starbuck said he had informed the company that he intended to raise awareness of the company's woke policies on social media.

It is hard to say if his pressure indeed caused this shift in company policy. According to Lowe's, it was last year's Supreme Court decision banning affirmative action at universities that led to the policy change.

The company has said it will continue to make additional changes to ensure its policies are not only lawful but cater to everyone's requirements.

Lowe is now the fourth company that has changed its DEI policies. Before this, Tractor Supply Company, Deere & Company, and Harley Davidson had succumbed to public backlash and reversed their woke policies.

The company had recently come under fire after fake news started circulating of its CEO asking people to take their money to Home Depot, a competitor if they didn't agree with the company's policies.

Lowe's confirmed on X that the statement was never made.

Human Rights Campaign response

The HRC was disappointed at the home improvement chain's decision to shun its DEI policies. It said the move will have negative consequences for the company's business.

US companies had originally adopted DEI policies after a severe public backlash regarding the treatment of minorities in the US. The backlash was triggered by the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

The policies, however, have started costing companies as more and more people call them out for pretending to care, rather than taking concrete steps to improve things for minorities.
