During her illustrious career, she has championed numerous social causes, including child safety, health, education, and empowerment.

As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly advances, it has sparked significant debate and concern, not only among the general public but also within the tech community itself.

One prominent voice in this discussion is Geoffrey Hinton, widely regarded as the “Godfather of AI.”

In 2023, Hinton resigned from Google to openly discuss the potential dangers of AI, expressing regret for his contributions to the field.

Elon Musk is another vocal critic of AI, having warned about its risks for years. He even signed an open letter calling for a halt to AI development due to its potential threats to humanity.

Given the mounting concerns surrounding AI, Oprah Winfrey is addressing these issues in her upcoming special, “AI and the Future of Us: An Oprah Winfrey Special,” set to premiere on September 12.

The show will feature prominent guests, including Bill Gates and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and aims to educate viewers about AI while fostering a crucial dialogue about its future impact.

The risks of AI

AI presents several risks that are becoming increasingly relevant as technology progresses.

One major concern is the potential for AI to exacerbate societal inequality.

Automation of repetitive, low-wage tasks could lead to job losses for those who are most in need of employment while allowing those at the top to reduce costs and increase their wealth.

Another significant risk is the misuse of AI by malicious actors.

If AI systems are compromised or misused, they could threaten digital, political, and physical security.

There is also the concern that AI could take over various systems based on the data it accesses, potentially causing harm if used with malicious intent.

Addressing these challenges is crucial as AI continues to evolve.

Mixed response

Many have appreciated Oprah’s attempt to clarify the myths surrounding AI. However, the efforts have come with their fair share of conspiracy theories.

Brian Merchant, who is a tech columnist for the LA Times and also runs his newsletter, called it an attempt to prevent the AI bubble from popping.

One cannot blame the public’s skepticism as Oprah also did a similar show on weight loss drugs earlier in the year. The weight loss drugs, originally intended to treat diabetes, also have had a mix response in terms of long term health and safety of the public.

For now, we will take Oprah Winfrey’s special as a step towards fostering understanding and collaboration among industry leaders, government officials, and civil society.

By highlighting these issues, the show aims to contribute to a more informed and responsible approach to AI development and its integration into society.
