Spotify pays record $10 billion in royalties in 2024, marking industry's biggest annual payout

  • Nearly 1,500 artists earned over $1 million in royalties from Spotify alone in 2024.
  • More than half of artists earning over $1,000 generated most of their income from international listeners.
  • Spotify’s publishing payouts hit new records, with nearly $4.5 billion paid to songwriters over two years.

Spotify reported a record $10 billion in royalties paid to music rights-holders in 2024, marking the highest single-year payout in the industry's history.

The Swedish streaming giant revealed that its annual payouts have grown tenfold since 2014, reflecting the increasing role of streaming in global music revenues.

Independent artists and labels earned more than $5 billion, reinforcing their growing presence in the industry.

The report also highlighted the expansion of music’s global reach, with artists generating earnings in multiple languages and from listeners outside their home countries.

Streaming revenues hit $10 billion

Spotify's latest annual report outlined its dominant role in the music industry’s revenue ecosystem, with total payouts hitting $10 billion in 2024.

This milestone brings the platform’s lifetime payouts to nearly $60 billion.

The surge in royalties coincides with a broader industry trend, where streaming has become the primary source of revenue for both major and independent artists.

Spotify’s revenue share for independent artists continues to grow, with indies collectively earning over $5 billion in 2024, accounting for about half of all royalties paid by the platform.

The rise in earnings has been driven by the sustained growth of paid streaming subscriptions.

Spotify’s report notes that the industry has rebounded significantly since its lowest point in 2014, when global recorded music revenue stood at just $13 billion.

By 2023, total recorded music revenue exceeded $28 billion, with streaming services playing a key role in this recovery.

More artists earning millions

The number of artists earning substantial income from Spotify continues to rise.

Nearly 1,500 artists generated over $1 million in royalties from the platform alone in 2024, with many likely surpassing $4 million across all revenue streams.

More than 100,000 artists earned thousands of dollars in royalties, highlighting how streaming has created sustainable careers across different levels of the industry.

Spotify's data indicates a major shift in how music is consumed globally. More than half of the artists earning over $1,000 in royalties saw the majority of their income come from listeners outside their home countries.

Nearly one-third of these artists generated more than 75% of their revenue from international audiences.

The rise of multilingual music is also evident, with artists earning over $1 million recording music in 17 different languages, while those surpassing $100,000 recorded in more than 50 languages.

Record payouts for songwriters

Songwriters have also benefited significantly from Spotify’s increasing royalty distributions.

The platform paid nearly $4.5 billion to publishing rights-holders over the past two years, reaching new record highs in 2024.

The company’s report highlighted that its music publishing payouts experienced double-digit growth compared to 2023, with songwriters earning more through their publishers, performing rights organisations (PROs), and collecting societies.

This data underscores the growing importance of streaming in generating revenue for all sectors of the music industry.

While streaming services continue to face scrutiny over their payment models, Spotify remains the highest-paying platform in the industry.

The report also positions streaming as a sustainable model for artists, songwriters, and rights-holders, with increased transparency and growing revenue opportunities at every level of the industry.
