Amazon.com Inc is one of the world’s largest technology and commerce companies, combining an online retail marketplace, a global logistics network, cloud computing, digital advertising, subscriptions, streaming media, and consumer devices. The company began as an internet bookseller and has developed into a platform used by consumers, merchants, developers, enterprises, and advertisers across many markets.
Its retail operations include first-party sales, where Amazon sells goods directly, and a large third-party marketplace that lets independent sellers reach customers through Amazon’s website and apps. The company supports this marketplace with fulfilment centres, delivery infrastructure, payments tools, seller services, and the Prime membership programme, which bundles delivery benefits with entertainment and other digital services. Retail remains the largest contributor to revenue, with North America and international e-commerce businesses exposed to consumer spending, competition, and logistics costs.
Amazon Web Services is the company’s cloud computing division and a major profit driver. AWS provides computing power, storage, databases, analytics, artificial intelligence tools, and other infrastructure services to businesses and public-sector customers. Its scale makes Amazon a central player in the global cloud market alongside other major technology groups.
Advertising has also become a significant business, as brands pay to reach shoppers across Amazon’s marketplace, streaming properties, and connected devices. This gives the company a high-margin revenue stream linked to both e-commerce traffic and digital marketing budgets.
Amazon’s stock is often analysed as a mix of retail scale, cloud infrastructure growth, advertising monetisation, and capital investment. Key issues include margin expansion, regulatory scrutiny, labour costs, international profitability, AI-related cloud demand, and the company’s ability to keep improving speed, selection, and convenience for customers.
