Mastercard Incorporated is a global payments technology company that operates one of the world’s largest electronic payment networks. Its core business connects card issuers, merchants, acquirers, consumers, businesses, and governments, enabling payments to be authorised, cleared, and settled securely across borders and channels. Mastercard does not generally issue cards or lend directly to cardholders; instead, it earns revenue from the use of its network, related transaction processing, and a growing range of value-added services.
The company is the second-largest payment processor globally and processed close to $11 trillion in volume during 2025. Its network operates in more than 200 countries and territories and supports transactions in more than 150 currencies, giving it broad exposure to consumer spending, travel, e-commerce, business payments, and the long-term migration from cash to digital payments.
Mastercard’s products include credit, debit, prepaid, commercial, and real-time payment solutions, along with tokenisation, fraud prevention, data analytics, loyalty, consulting, and cybersecurity services. These capabilities help banks and merchants manage risk, improve approval rates, and expand digital commerce. The company also participates in newer payment areas such as account-to-account transfers, open banking, and digital identity.
Mastercard’s business model benefits from scale, brand recognition, and global acceptance, as each additional participant can make the network more useful to others. Its results are sensitive to consumer and business transaction volumes, cross-border travel, foreign exchange trends, regulation of interchange and network fees, and competition from Visa, domestic card schemes, bank transfer systems, fintech platforms, and emerging payment technologies.
