Seagate Technology Holdings is one of the world’s major manufacturers of data storage hardware, best known for its hard disk drives used in enterprise, cloud, and consumer markets. The company supplies drives and related storage systems to hyperscale data centre operators, original equipment manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and businesses that need large volumes of reliable digital storage.
Seagate operates in an industry with high technical barriers to entry, where scale, manufacturing expertise, and long product cycles matter. Alongside Western Digital, it is part of a highly concentrated global hard drive market. The company is vertically integrated across key parts of design, engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain management, which helps it compete on capacity, performance, cost, and product reliability.
The business is closely tied to long-term growth in data creation. Cloud computing, artificial intelligence workloads, video, enterprise backup, surveillance, and connected devices all contribute to demand for mass-capacity storage. While solid-state drives dominate many high-performance applications, hard drives remain important where customers need very large storage capacity at a relatively low cost per terabyte.
Seagate’s product portfolio includes nearline drives for data centres, enterprise performance drives, consumer drives, external storage products, and specialised storage solutions. Its results can be cyclical because customers adjust inventories and capital spending, particularly in cloud and enterprise markets. For investors, Seagate represents exposure to the infrastructure layer of the digital economy, with performance influenced by storage demand, pricing trends, technology transitions, and the capital discipline of a concentrated hardware market.
