Target (TGT)
NYSE Market Closed
Target Corporation is one of the largest general merchandise retailers in the United States, serving customers through a nationwide store network and a sizeable digital commerce operation. Founded as the first Target store in 1962, the company has developed a retail format that combines discount pricing with a stronger emphasis on design, owned brands, and curated merchandising than many traditional big-box competitors.
Target sells a broad range of everyday and discretionary products, including beauty items, household essentials, groceries, apparel, electronics, toys, home décor, and furniture. Its revenue is spread across several major categories, with essentials and food helping to drive frequent visits while apparel, home, and hardlines contribute to its differentiated brand positioning. The company also relies heavily on private-label and exclusive brands, which account for a meaningful share of sales and allow Target to control product design, pricing, and margins.
The business is anchored by its physical stores, which function both as shopping destinations and as fulfillment hubs for online orders. Services such as order pickup, drive-up collection, and same-day delivery connect the store base with Target’s digital platform and help the company compete in omnichannel retail. Nearly all of its revenue comes from the US, making its performance closely tied to American consumer spending, retail competition, wage and freight costs, and shifts in demand between discretionary and essential goods.
Target’s investment case typically centers on its brand strength, store productivity, merchandising mix, and ability to balance value with style in a highly competitive retail market.
