According to an announcement on Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) declared having received a petition that highlights an issue of abrupt unintended acceleration with the Tesla Inc. vehicles. The claim implores NHTSA to launch a formal investigation that could see 500,000 Tesla vehicles recalled in the upcoming months.
As per the sources, Tesla Model S 2012 to 2019 make, Model X 2016 to 2019 make, Model 3 2018 and 2019, are highlighted to have the aforementioned issue in the petition. The agency further added that it has received 127 complaints from the consumers in total, out of which at least 123 were unique. NHTSA also highlighted such complaints to be associated with 110 crashes and at least 52 reported injuries.
An official response or comment from Tesla has so far not been received.
Some Prominent Examples Of The Complaints
Copy link to sectionThe majority of the complaints highlighted the vehicles to have abruptly accelerated without driver’s intention as he tried to park the car at a curb or in a garage. Others, on the other hand, reported similar incidents while the vehicle was using driver assistance systems while in traffic that ended in crashes.
In one such incident, the driver claimed to have parked the Tesla Model S 85D (2015). But in a matter of minutes, it started accelerating again and crashed into one of the other parked cars on the street. Another complaint highlighted the vehicle to have accelerated while being parked at an elementary school. The vehicle had sufficient acceleration to go over a curb. The car, as per the driver, ultimately ended into a fence.
Tesla Faced A Similar Issue In 2019 As Well
Copy link to sectionTesla has previously been under a similar scandal when consumers reported incidents of their vehicles’ (Model S and X 2012 to 2019) batteries catching fire. Tesla had upgraded the software in 2,000 of its vehicles following the claims. The NHTSA, however, launched a thorough evaluation in October that sought the need for the U.S electric car manufacture to recall 2,000 of its vehicles instead.
Through the thick and thin, Tesla has performed largely upbeat in the stock market in 2019. The stock is currently exchanging hands at around $510 in the stock market that marks an around 200% growth for the $92.01 billion company as compared to 2019’s low of $185. Tesla has already hiked by a little under 25% in 2020 so far. The NHTSA’s announcement on Friday failed to stir an aggressive move in Tesla’s stock.
