  • Tesla's October robotaxi event at Warner Bros. Studios could have great historic significance.
  • Success could disrupt the ride-hailing market; failure may push Tesla behind competitors.
  • Tesla's use of Hollywood setting may suggest a futuristic robotaxi that may still not be ready.

In a typical Elon Musk way, the announcement of the venue for Tesla's October robotaxi event has generated more hype than is healthy for the company.

Tesla is already struggling to deliver on its robotaxi promise but the choice of venue has some wondering if something big is coming up.

The event, which was originally supposed to be held on August 8, is now scheduled for October 10, just under 6 weeks from now.

The announced venue, Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, seems to be quite deliberate.

The venue has historic and cultural significance, suggesting Tesla's event may have some historical context rather than just a product launch.

Utilizing the Hollywood glamour

The Warner Bros. Studio in question is spread over 110 acres.

The venue enjoys a unique place in American culture, with famous productions like Friends and Batman produced here.

What the online community is suggesting is that the venue could be a deliberate attempt on behalf of Tesla to show the leap between reality and science fiction: from human-controlled cars to robotaxis!

Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, is also thinking along the same lines.

He goes as far as calling it a 'masterstroke'. Whether that is indeed the case, we will only know when the event happens.

Elon Musk's history tells us not to get too ahead of ourselves with expectations.

Some have also suggested that involving Hollywood could be a negative development.

It suggests that Tesla still needs an element of film-making, or the perfect setting, to pull off something that is still not ready to become a reality.

If robotaxis aren't hitting the roads anytime soon, Tesla will need a lot of Hollywood intervention to make the event look like a success.

Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal says:

What's at stake for Tesla?

Tesla's robotaxis were supposed to hit the road many years ago. But Elon Musk has a history of overpromising and underdelivering.

Even though the event is only a few weeks away, no one knows if the robotaxi exists. Delaying the event by two months has further strengthened the belief that the tech isn't ready yet.

Despite all that, the event carries a lot of significance for Tesla. Its EV deliveries are slowing down and robotaxis and humanoid robots are the next big things for the company.

Sandy Munro, automotive analysis specialist, says:

That disruption is what's at stake for Tesla. If the unveiling is successful, it could strengthen Tesla's reputation as the leader in innovation and disruption when it comes to electric vehicles.

If it is unable to convince the public, it might be time to go back to the likes of Waymo and Baidu to help start the next ride-hailing revolution.
