  • Dana White is the CEO of UFC and a close ally of US President-elect Donald Trump.
  • Other appointments to Meta's board include John Elkaan and Charlie Songhurst.
  • This comes after Meta elevated Republican policy executive Joel Kaplan to global affairs head.

Meta Platforms announced the election of three new directors to its board on Monday.

The move underscores Meta’s ambition to deepen its expertise in artificial intelligence, wearables, and human connection, as the company positions itself for future growth.

Dana White joins Meta's board

Dana White, CEO of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and a close ally of President-elect Donald Trump, is among the new additions.

White, known for his passion for building brands, expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity:

"I've never been interested in joining a board of directors until I got the offer to join Meta's board. I am a huge believer that social media and AI are the future," said White.

White also shares a personal connection with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, a mixed martial arts enthusiast. Their relationship has grown over the years, with Zuckerberg attending UFC events and engaging with White.

White was also active in making the cage fight between billionaires Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg a reality. However, the fight never actually happened.

Other appointments to Meta's board

John Elkann, CEO of Exor, a holding company controlled by Italy's Agnelli family, also joins Meta’s board.

Elkann brings extensive global business experience, which he believes will contribute to Meta's growth:

"I am honored to be able to contribute to the future of one of the most significant companies of the 21st century," Elkann said.

Exor holds stakes in companies such as Ferrari and Christian Louboutin, and Elkann also serves as Executive Chairman of Stellantis NV and Ferrari. His leadership in these high-profile global businesses adds a new dimension to Meta’s strategic planning.

Investor and former Microsoft executive Charlie Songhurst, the third addition, has been part of Meta’s AI advisory group since May.

He highlighted the potential he sees in Meta's innovation:

His inclusion emphasizes Meta’s commitment to leveraging AI to drive innovation and future growth.

In line with the Trump era?

These appointments come as Meta prepares for potential political and technological shifts, including a second Trump presidency.

The company has recently taken steps to rebuild its relationship with conservative audiences, including elevating Republican policy executive Joel Kaplan to global affairs head.

Despite their previous clashes over social media bans imposed on the former president, Mark Zuckerberg recently met with Donald Trump and contributed to his inauguration fund.
