In his 2008 piece, the billionaire chairman and chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway also recalled the 20^th century in which the US “endured two world wars, the Depression, a dozen recessions, oil shocks, a flu epidemic, and the resignation of a disgraced president.”

Still, Dow – an index of 30 prominent US-listed companies soared in the 20^th century from 66 to 11,497, Buffett added.
