Gold falls as strong dollar and higher yields cap bullion gains

Spot gold and silver prices moved lower ahead of the North American market open on Tuesday.

A firmer US dollar, elevated Treasury yields and caution ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve decision weighed on precious metals.

At the time of writing, spot gold was trading near $4,031.00 an ounce.

The metal was down 1.09% on the session.

Spot silver was trading near $57.19 an ounce, down 1.89%.

Gold’s early trading range stood between $4,016.20 and $4,082.90.

The metal remained above the $4,000 support area.

Silver traded between $56.60 and $58.70 earlier in the session.

The metal held above the $55.00 support area.

However, it failed to reclaim the $58.53 to $59.44 trader-reaction zone.

Fed decision keeps traders cautious

Market positioning following the latest significant US economic data remains less dovish than the earlier reaction to consumer price and producer price data had suggested.

Softer inflation and weaker durable-goods orders previously helped push Treasury yields lower.

Stronger retail sales, low jobless claims, firmer business activity and improved consumer sentiment have limited expectations for a clear shift in Federal Reserve policy.

Markets still expect the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates at this week’s meeting.

However, the possibility of a rate hike remains a meaningful risk in market pricing.

Oil and energy-related inflation pressures have also not fully cleared.

This has added to uncertainty over the central bank’s policy outlook.

The 10-year Treasury yield was near 4.62%.

The 2-year Treasury yield was near 4.31%.

At the same time, the US dollar was trading near a one-month high.

The combination has left gold supported by the $4,000 floor.

The metal continues to face pressure from higher interest rates and a stronger currency.

Gold falls toward $4,050 in asian trading

Earlier on Tuesday, gold fell toward $4,050 an ounce during Asian trading.

The decline came as a stronger US dollar and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next policy move increased pressure on the non-yielding metal.

Spot bullion declined about 0.7% to $4,044.81 by 0239 GMT on July 28.

The dollar remained near a one-month high.

Gold’s performance continues to reflect the tension between support from geopolitical uncertainty and pressure from currency and interest-rate factors.

The metal has managed to remain above the $4,000 support area.

However, the stronger dollar and elevated Treasury yields have limited its upward momentum.

Silver has faced similar pressure.

Its early move kept prices above the $55.00 support level but below the $58.53 to $59.44 trader-reaction zone.

Investors now remain focused on the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision.

The central bank’s rate signal could influence Treasury yields, the US dollar and demand for precious metals.

Until then, gold and silver are likely to remain sensitive to changes in rate expectations, currency movements and developments around energy markets and global shipping risks.
