  • Mission will demonstrate the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth orbit
  • DOGE-1 might become the first cubesat to reach the moon

ZenX, CeDeFi incubator and ecosystem and Unizen, a leading smart exchange ecosystem, announced a partnership with Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) to develop and launch DOGE-1, the first crypto-funded mission to the moon, Invezz learned from a press release.

The spacecraft will collect lunar-spatial data using its onboard sensor and camera array and transmit it to GEC via its onboard communications module.

Sean Noga, CEO of Unizen and ZenX, said:

A first for the crypto and space community

This partnership is pioneering in both the crypto and space community. The launch of SpaceX Falcon 9, scheduled in the first quarter of next year, was funded with Dogecoin (DOGE/USD), making it the first space mission paid for using cryptocurrency.

Tom Ochinero, SpaceX Vice President of Commercial Sales, said:

Samuel Reid, CEO of GEC, said:

DOGE-1 might become the first cubesat to reach the moon

More than 1,600 cubesats (square-shaped mini satellites) have been launched to date, but they have all been launched into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which is between 100 - 1,200 miles above Earth’s surface. DOGE-1 could be the first cubesat in history to reach the moon, marking a significant achievement for global spaceflight.

A milestone for large-scale crypto-funded projects

Although it has yet to take place, the mission is a significant success because it has shown that cryptocurrency can be a flexible, yet stable form of financing for projects of great magnitude. The partners are convinced this historic use case will become a milestone for other crypto-funded missions.
