Microsoft expands AI footprint with new London office

Microsoft, a leading technology firm, announced its plans to establish a new office in London, exclusively dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) research and development.

Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, revealed that the company will soon begin advertising roles for "exceptional individuals" in the field of AI.

While the exact number of jobs to be created remains undisclosed, Suleyman expressed confidence in tapping into the vast pool of AI talent and expertise prevalent in the UK.

In a blog post, he emphasized Microsoft AI's commitment to making a significant, long-term investment in the region by recruiting top AI scientists and engineers for the new AI hub.

Mr. Suleyman, who co-founded the renowned AI research lab DeepMind in the UK before joining Microsoft in March, highlighted the leadership of AI engineer Jordan Hoffmann in spearheading the operations at the new London office.

Hoffmann, with his experience at DeepMind and Inflection AI, brings a wealth of knowledge to drive pioneering work in advancing state-of-the-art language models and their supporting infrastructure.

Why the London office for Microsoft?

The decision to establish the AI hub in London comes amid Microsoft's substantial investment in AI, including its partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT.

OpenAI opened its own London office in 2023, further solidifying the city's position as a thriving hub for AI innovation.

Suleyman also commended the UK's "safety-first" approach to AI, noting the recent collaboration agreement between UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and the US to test advanced AI models.
