  • One of the original Bitcoin supporters was called out during a recent BTC-only conference due to his support of a project considered a scam.
  • Trace Mayer, one of the so-called Bitcoin OGs, was called out on stage, and even mocked as he presented 'The Scammy Award' to another former BTC maximalist.
  • Mayer was also ridiculed by the community which had him read a speech that said that the coin he was promoting — MimbleWimble — was a scam.

One of Bitcoin’s earliest supporters and advocates, Trace Mayer, was recently called out on-stage during a Bitcoin conference. The footage released after the event shows the so-called Bitcoin OG, who has recently fallen from grace in the eyes of the community, being called out for altcoin shilling.

Mayer, who is also a host of a podcast called Bitcoin Knowledge, became a target of every Bitcoin maximalist out there, after shilling a new privacy coin known as Mimblewimble Coin (MWC).

As mentioned, Mayer was among the first ones to start talking about Bitcoin all the way back in 2010. He has been a proponent for a full decade now, but he became known to the world due to the promotion of a yearly event known as proof-of-keys.  His praise of monetary sovereignty and libertarian tendencies made him not only famous but also extremely popular.

However, his reputation was ruined entirely by the decision to promote a scammy altcoin.

What actually happened?

It all happened last weekend when Tone Vays — another known crypto trader and YouTuber — hosted the event called Unconfiscatable. The event is famous enough to attract numerous Bitcoin maximalists who enjoy talking and listening about the crypto space, enjoying poker tournaments, and other pleasantries.

Then, during the event, Mayer started talking about MWC to the gathered crowd, which was a bad move on a Bitcoin-only conference. Even worse, he spoke very highly about the project, there and during his interviews on YouTube.

However, the project has been rather disappointing to the crypto community due to its distribution model, where 50% of its 20 million tokens were already pre-mined.

With the token already being doubted and criticized, Mayer ruined his own reputation while speaking favorably about it, instead of improving the reputation of the coin. Mayer was also criticized by those who believe that he abused his reputation to pump the unworthy project.

The mentioned footage shows him in front of the crows, while he is called out quite brutally. Then, during the portion of the event called The Scammy Awards, he was called out on stage to present the award and read the speech which open,y mentions MimbleWimble as a scammy project. However, the award itself went to another BTC maximalist who turned altcoin shill, Richard Heart.
