  • SOCIETY2’s framework aims to introduce a new standard of privacy for social media platforms.
  • The firm is building its framework on top of IOTA Streams.
  • SOCIETY2 expects to have a prototype of its platform ready by Q3 2020.

SOCIETY2, a decentralized social media framework, has started working on what it considers the future of social media. The firm unveiled this news on May 5 through an official announcement. In the announcement, SOCIETY2 noted that it had launched its official website. The website outlines the high-level visions and perks that their framework aims to deliver to social media users and social media platforms.

According to the announcement, SOCIETY2’s decentralized social media (DeSM) framework will offer a new standard in privacy, control, and interoperability between social media platforms. As such, these features will benefit end-users and introduce a competitive landscape for social media platforms seeking to achieve mass adoption.

Building on top of IOTA Streams

SOCIETY2 revealed that it is developing its DeSM framework on top of IOTA Streams, a framework for cryptographic applications that the IOTA Foundation is building. Through IOTA Streams, SOCIETY2 will be able to build a system that will enable seamless content encryption and sharing between users and platforms.

Paired with other technology being developed for the IOTA blockchain, such as decentralized identity, the SOCIETY2 framework will offer numerous perks. However, the most significant of these benefits will be providing a new level of control for social media users and platforms.

In the publication, SOCIETY2 noted that it expects to have a prototype of its framework available for community feedback by Q3 this year.

Apart from developing the prototype, SOCIETY2 is also looking to expand its team. Additionally, the project seeks to welcome expression of interest from designers and developers that have experience in social media and the blockchain.

The DeSM sector is yet to go mainstream

Per Joseph Skewes, the head of operations at SOCIETY2, there is no widespread adoption of decentralized social media platforms, frameworks, or protocols at the moment. As a result, this offers SOCIETY2 a unique opportunity.

Commenting on this, Skewes said,

“There has been no mainstream adoption of decentralized social media to date. One of the largest DeSM services that exists has only several million users (with less than two million of them active). To us, that suggests that these other platforms aren’t (yet) solving a large enough problem. We expect wider adoption may come when mainstream platforms realize the benefits that using a decentralized standard can bring. Twitter is one platform showing an interest and recently started funding independent research into standards which may suit the future use of Twitter.”
