What is DigiByte?

Copy link to section

DigiByte is software that lets developers build applications with additional security compared to many other blockchains. Its cryptocurrency helps run the software, as developers need it to create on the platform, or it can be bought, sold, and traded like any other coin.

DigiByte was launched in 2013 as a Bitcoin alternative and uses five different algorithms to improve security and transaction speed. The five different algorithms that DigiByte supports are Sha256, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit, and Odocrypt.

How does DigiByte work?

Copy link to section

Digibyte works by storing all transactions on its blockchain. Every time a transaction is made, it is added as a new block on the blockchain. Like Bitcoin, Digibyte uses a proof of work consensus mechanism. This means miners must solve equations to secure the network and verify transactions. The miner who is first at solving an equation gets to validate a block of transactions and is rewarded with DGB tokens.

How is the DigiByte network secured?

Copy link to section

The Digibyte network is secured by the blockchain and algorithms it runs on. This is similar to Bitcoin, although Digibyte uses five different algorithms compared to Bitcoins. Digibytes algorithms encrypt transaction information inside each block when it is created. When miners verify a transaction, it is linked to the previous block, creating a blockchain. Miners are rewarded with DGB tokens for their work in verifying transactions.

Digibyte is different to other crypto projects that use mining. For projects like Bitcoin, mining requires a large amount of computing power and is carried out by well-funded technology companies. Mining and verifying transactions on the Digibyte network can be completed by anyone, even with basic computing power.

What is DigiByte used for?

Copy link to section

Digibyte is a digital currency, so it can be used as a means of payment to buy or sell goods and services. Developers can also use the software to build dApps and encode smart contracts onto the Digibyte blockchain. Like all cryptocurrencies, Digibyte is also used as an asset to trade. Its price is volatile and provides long-term investors and short-term traders with plenty of opportunities to speculate.

Why does DGB have value?

Copy link to section

Digibyte’s value comes from its blockchain network using five algorithms, compared to most that use just one. By using five algorithms, the blockchain is not only more secure, but faster and less reliant on energy consumption during the mining process. The speed of Digibyte is considerably faster than similar coins; Digibyte blocks occur every 15 seconds, which is 40x faster than Bitcoin and 10x faster than Litecoin.

Who created DigiByte?

Copy link to section

Digibyte was created by Jared Tate, who founded the platform in 2013 and lead its development up until 2020 when he announced he was temporarily retiring from his position. Volunteers run Digibyte’s day-to-day from the Digibyte Foundation. There is no CEO of the project and its volunteer community are in charge of its development, marketing, and promotion.

Are there any DigiByte alternatives?
