NS&I will not slash premium bond prizes
Copy link to sectionThe NS&I had initially announced plans to reduce the number of prizes to be won, however, the same was recanted on the 17th of last month, saying the decision was arrived at after resolving to support millions of diligent premium bond savers who may be facing struggles due to the pandemic. On Feb 17, the organisation had announced it would be cutting the number of prizes by at least 170,000.
If the cut had been effected, the amount of money to be won would reduce to about £3,300,000.00, and the odds of winning would have shifted to about 26,000 to 1 from 24,000 to 1, while effectively slashing the premium bond annual rate to 1.3% down from 1.4%.
Take note that premium bonds do not earn interest; instead, amounts held in this respect are subject to periodic growth rates, in this case, at an annual rate of 1.4%.
A raft of other planned changes have also been called off indefinitely, but cuts to fixed-term accounts will proceed as planned.
Are you a winner?
Copy link to sectionOfficial NS&I reports indicate that approximately 1.7m premium bondholders are yet to claim their prizes valued at over £65,000,000.00.
Winners are normally notified each month using contact details registered at NS&I. However, in cases where a bondholder changed addresses or houses, it may not be possible to reach them.
All premium bond investors are advised to check online whether they have any unclaimed prizes. To obtain the info, you’ll need to have your NS&I number and a few other personal details. You can also opt to set your future winnings to be deposited directly to your bank account.
